Arenal Volcano Guide

Your guide to exploring the Arenal volcano region and discovering Arenal Volcano Ecological Park: an accessible private reserve 6 miles from La Fortuna with lava field trails, a volcanic lagoon, and options for every travel style.

ARENAL AT A GLANCE

One volcano, a whole region.

Five quick facts to help you understand the Arenal area before you visit.

  1. The volcano

Arenal rises 1,657 m (5,437 ft) above sea level and is a classic stratovolcano formed by repeated layers of lava, ash, and rock. Its most recent active period lasted from 1968 to 2010, leaving behind volcanic terrain that now supports rainforest, trails, and some of the region’s most distinctive landscapes.

  2. La Fortuna town

La Fortuna is the primary gateway town located just 10 km (6 miles) east of Arenal Volcano. Serving as the main regional travel hub, it offers hostels, hotels, local restaurants, and tour departures, making it the ideal starting base for exploring surrounding rainforests and volcanic trails.

  3. Lake Arenal vs. Laguna Tabacon

Lake Arenal is Costa Rica’s largest regional lake, framing the western side of the mountain. In contrast, Laguna Tabacon is our private in-park volcanic lagoon, offering tranquil waters framed by rainforest for kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and scenic picnic breaks during your park visit.

  4. Climate and microclimates

Arenal’s humid tropical environment creates unique microclimates where weather shifts rapidly over short distances. Rain and heavy cloud cover occur year-round across the tropical canopy, making early morning hours the single best time to see clear, unobstructed views of the iconic volcanic peak.

  5. Getting around

Navigating the main road from La Fortuna is straightforward for all travelers. Located just 15 minutes away along paved routes, the park entrance is easily reached by rental car, local taxi, shared shuttle, or the round-trip hotel transport (Zone 1) that comes with the guided tours.
